Recently, a locker participant who was dealing with health challenges shared with SoWe staff that she was still able to walk to community meals despite being extremely weak because she was able to store her belongings in her locker instead of carrying everything with her.
Providing 24/7 access to lockers provides several benefits including:
Protection of Belongings
Reduces theft and loss of essential items (IDs, medications, personal documents). Prevents disruptions caused by city cleanups or displacement.
Enhanced Dignity and Autonomy
Offers a sense of security and control over personal property. Reduces stigma by allowing individuals to move freely without carrying all possessions.
Improved Access to Services
Frees individuals to attend medical appointments, job interviews, and social programs. Lockers near service hubs create centralized outreach points.
Health and Safety
Protects medications and critical items from theft and weather exposure. Supports public health by reducing stress and vulnerability.
