Scoop The Poop
Enjoy this beautiful section of the neighborhood – with lots of green space, colorful tree canopy, and now, thanks to the devotion of a nearby neighbor, multiple trash cans around this walking loop, to easily dispose your bagged dog poop; PLUS - free poop bags if you forgot yours at home!
These new trashcans and free dog poop bags are a part of a resident leadership pilot that began in 2025! Read the full story below:
Bunny — the adorable dog pictured above and the official poster child for this pilot — has a favorite walking loop near her home. But on this treasured, tree-lined urban nature walk, her parents grew increasingly frustrated that their beloved route was littered with fresh dog poop every day — in tree wells and on the sidewalk. So they decided to do something about it!
This neighbor began installing free dog poop bag dispensers and trash cans (and has even been heroically volunteering to empty them multiple times a week!)! Their biggest focus, however, has been adding wonderfully witty, and memorable, environmental education signs, in both English and Spanish, in new and unexpected places along their walking loop (like the ones pictured here).
In preparation for this pilot, this resident read through dozens of studies showing that one of the main reasons people don’t pick up their pet’s waste is because they think no one notices.
To change that, this neighbor started spraying temporary chalk on top of each abandoned poop piles, to make its presence unmistakably visible (which has the added bonus of helping passersby avoid accidentally stepping in it), and directly next to it, adding a friendly reminder “Pick it up.” Alongside this, they’ve shared helpful information about what really happens when pet waste is left behind — and what doesn’t.
Dog poop isn’t just unsightly — it’s harmful to people, animals, and our waterways! Even in “natural” spots like tree wells, it doesn’t break down quickly and carries diseases that affect the whole community! So be sure to always clean up after your pet, and if you want to make it really easy on yourself – enjoy this fully outfitted loop! Or work with us to create another one close to where you live!
